Cedar Hill Cemetery
You feel the history surrounding you when you visit this cemetery. Located on Lancaster Avenue, the Cedar Hill Cemetery was established in 1792 - just nine years after the arrival of the United Empire Loyalists.
Many famous New Brunswickers are buried here. Charles Gorman is buried here - even though a cenotaph for him sits in King Square in uptown Saint John.
The Paris Crew shocked the world when they defeated the London Rowing Club and won the World Rowing Championship in 1867. The four crew members, Robert Fulton, Elijah Ross, George Price, Sam Hutton, plus their manager, Sheriff James A Harding, are all memorialized here.
William Boggs was the oldest United Empire Loyalist. He died at the age of 104 on May 18, 1838. He was buried in the Cedar Hill Cemetery, as were many other Loyalist families.
We invite you to visit. There are inscriptions dating back to the 1830s, all recording a part of Saint John's history.
Headstone for Sarah Margaret “Maggie” Vail.
Her story can be seen on the Canadian Enclopedia website - and the UNB website.
Cedar Hill Extension
In 1922, acres of green land high on Manawagonish Road in West Saint John were purchased as an extension of the Cedar Hill Cemetery. A grove of majestic maple trees dot the drive. It's a peaceful, elegant resting place with majestic views of the Bay of Fundy's blue waters. The lush green grass is well kept, and you often see families visiting a grave.
When you enter the drive you catch sight of the large cannon and flags at our Field of Honour. In addition to adding character to the cemetery, it is a proud reminder of our Canadian heritage and the sacrifice of our brave Canadian veterans.
The Cedar Hill Extension is the resting place of many Saint John veterans. The Field of Honour was set aside as a tribute to the men and women who served their country. You can see the Bay of Fundy from this location. There is some space available within this location. Please contact us about the requirements.
The public is welcome to join the Branch 69 Legion memorial ceremonies held each year in November in this cemetery's Field of Honour.
Some of Saint John's well-known businesspeople are buried here. Walk among the movers and shakers of their day who helped Saint John prosper and grow.
George Chittick who established the Chittick Ready Mix Concrete Plant rests here, as well as Parker D. Mitchell whose company still bears his name.
Greenwood Cemetery
Greenwood Cemetery was established in 1869.
This peaceful 55 acres is located on Sand Cove Road on the drive to the Irving Nature Park. Sea captains, merchants, farmers, businesspersons, mill workers and other New Brunswick residents sleep within view of the Bay of Fundy. Large trees line the edges of the cemetery. Deer and foxes can often been seen.
This cemetery is bright and sunny. There's the smell of the salt air and the sound of birds. It's a calm and peaceful place.
Greenwood Cemetery has a Field of Honour for veterans and their spouses.
There is space available within this location. Please contact us about the requirements.
